Auxiliary transmission cooler location recomandation

Hi new L322 owner I intend to use my RR to tow and so want to add an auxiliary transmission cooler, I note there is very little space in the grille area, so rather than re-invent the wheel thought I would ask first the best location to place the cooler before making a purchase, as we know heat is the biggest killer of transmission and I intend to change the oil when the fitting the cooler.
Any recommendations on ATF compatibility to the land rover stuff?
Could anyone advice what size of cooler to use and also what location did they place it.
A. Behind front grille- what size of cooler used?
B. Engine side of coolant radiator- what size of cooler used?

Regards
Bronjen Confused

I doubt very much you'll need it - we've been towing with Range Rovers for over 10 years now and have never had a problem with the gearbox overheating. As long as nothing is clogged (sludge in radiator bottom) you should have no problems.

Save your money for the things you'll really need such as worn suspension/bushes, air compressor/drier/control valves/bags, IID Tool BT, oil changes and filters, crankcase ventilation, oil separator and other hoses, blocked main radiator etc.

The 4.4 V8 is a brilliant towcar and my 2004 has 196k on the clock - a lot of it towing. I also wouldn't personally worry about an auxiliary cooler - as Stu says, you'll need the money for a load of preventative maintenance

I would though personally recommend changing the radiator and the standard gearbox cooler - this uses the bottom few fins on the main radiator and can get sludged up - change those two both first and change the gearbox and diff fluids. Check the PCV and breather hoses and check/replace suspension components. Assuming none of it has been documented as being changed recently. You won't see much change out of £1500 unfortunately but that's the better investment IMO Current Fleet:-

Good advise above, I would add fitting a lower temp cooling stat. This will bring down running temp of both engine and gearbox. No7 - 2003 V8 Vogue

This one only for the gearbox. Use anything else and you will have trouble.

You may as well change the filter for a new one if you are going to the expense of changing the fluid, I think the genuine one is a filtrans

Make sure it’s a genuine or OEM. Thumbs Up
You can’t change all the fluid without power flush as some will remain in the TC but I think the better way of doing it is to change what you can and then repeat later on.
Make sure you follow the Rave procedure and when we changed mine we used a modified fence sprayer as recommended by saintv8 to pump in the fluid. I removed the spray nozzle and cable tied on a short length of garden hose.
