New (to me) L322 but whinning from trans? Issue fixed

Drove our MY07 VSE home today and although I did hear a noise when testing it seemed to be more persistant (or obvious) on the drive home.
It has what sounds like a whirring noise which is gearing related (engine speed I guess).

I have a couple of ideas......transmission? engine ancillary?

Hoping for a cheap alternative ie NOT transmission unless it just needs oil/flush.

Seems everything else on the car is spot on, no other faults at all, well except for slight tailgate bubbling, but then it wouldnt be a RR without that. David

If you suspect that it might be the transmission, and the noise is engine speed dependent, then there would be no harm in just checking that the fluid level is correct (only use Lifeguard Fluid 6 to top-up, of course). The seals on the connector sleeve were problematic on earlier models causing external fluid leaks, and the resulting low fluid level may cause the pump to suck air and cavitate, creating a noise. Probably optimistic, but maybe worth a try?

My first thought was low fluid, not sure why but just a feeling. As soon as I got home I looked for the dipstick.....silly me, too easy!
Unfortunately it won’t be me crawling under the car any more, too old and ill to be doing that anymore, we will pop in to a local specialist today hopefully and have a word.
Thank you. David

Seems to more under hood towards the front of the engine, popped into our local specialist this morning and it is booked on Thursday for investigation......better start massaging my wallet!

Hopefully they think it might be belts rather than anything else. David

On mine the air con belt tensioner bearings had run dry.

Started as a light squealing noise when it was cold and got progressively worse till the point it was constant.

I pulled it apart one weekend but couldn't get a new tensioner from anywhere locally so ended up sripping it and re-greasing the bearing as a temporary fix. That was over a year ago and it's still good to Today!

At the Indie today, stripped down the front end a bit and found the tensioner bearing rough, the belt running off one of the idlers by a “groove” causing the idler to run off centre I guess, anyway new tensioner, idler and belt ordered to be fitted.

I hope that’s it Neutral David

Fixed.....

It was the tensioner bearing worn (very rough bearing), tensioner, idler and belt replaced........all quiet now, just the lovely V8 burbling along. David
