I would like to be able to remove the structure behind the clutch foot rest in order to be able to free up the space to stretch my left leg out. A 6’6” D4 driving friend is very interested to know if it can be done too, as it would put the car on his shortlist now that D4’s are no longer available.

I once did it to a new Citroen C5 (don’t ask!!) by pulling the carpet back and removing a block of polystyrene - but that was a C5 and it was very poorly built.

Has anyone ever tried it on the 405, or simply got access to it to see what the support is made of?

Okay, “left” foot rest!

So, it would seem no one’s tried it then.

On Sunday morning, I removed the panel that sits above the pedals, a panel which is completely out of sight to the driver. The top of the carpet is then accessible. I tried putting my hand behind the carpet, but the carpet and insulation are incredibly thick and semi rigid; this is high quality stuff, the likes of which I’ve never seen before!

I had an urgent call to go out, so I left the panel off and I’ve done a hundred plus miles since.

To my amazement, with the panel removed, there’s a huge gap available; a gap big enough to comfortably put the top half of my foot in and for the very first time, I can stretch my left leg out fully and then some! The panel isn’t going back
