Well done! All that was caused by a failed EGR valve...

It reminds me of when I had my e60 bmw 5 series as they had a common issue with the swirl flaps in the inlet manifold failing. The engine would digest them and then that would be game over.

I fitted blanks a soon as I bought it.

I think if I owned a 3.6 I'd be getting the EGR's replaced or blanked straight away.

@ Paul thornton: agreed! What a nightmare....my 2010, 3.6 has covered 66k miles....I’m wondering when the EGR valves should be replaced....review by Harry Metcalf (Harry’s Garage) suggests 90k miles....but could that be too late? I always use V-Power diesel which, despite the cost, hopefully helps.....

Fair play for sorting that lot out yourself. You must feel very chuffed. Great job.
EGR valves are a scurge on modern diesels.
I know of so many engines destroyed by Egr valves.
Not just FFRR but different manufacturers and its always a big bill.
On a fatty I'd map them out and ease the worries.
£400 for a quality map and Egr delete or £600 to replace the Egr's. Pick one option chaps or trouble looms. Just my opinion. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

Mapping out EGRs wouldn't necessarily prevent an EGR being ingested if it broke off though. It would still be under heat & pressure from the exhaust.

Blanking off (and optionally mapping out) would be a physical barrier to the failure. __

Excuse my ignorance j-rov but is there a part that breaks free from the EGR valve that is ingested?

If this is the case, I assume, fitting a blanking plate will prevent this happening?

Thanks in advance for clarifying Thumbs Up

Yes, in this picture you'll see what's left of the valve disc. The missing part was sucked in to the intake and back thru turbo and so on until it was many shards of metal.

A blanking kit consists of a plate which connects to the EGR and a plate that connects to the intake manifold. The existing pipe is removed and therefore a broken EGR valve (or indeed all the exhaust soot) cannot get thru.

Hi, i bought them from the engine manufacturer directly. They were very very expensive.

Happy to loan them to you for a refundable deposit and postage cost... __

Hi, extremely informative post and well presented! Nice job!

I'm attempting the exact same thing however can't seem to find the engine hoist brackets anywhere.

Called JLR and of course they to don't sell to average joe...

Would anyone have an idea where I might be able to source them from??
