Decode you VIN Number

If you have ever wondered what your VIN code actually tells a dealer or the DVLA etc, this is how to work it out and to ensure your car is as per the original factory spec.

Information courtesy of BM52 on the Defender forum.

Decoding your Land Rover VIN Number

Identifying Your Vehicle Using the Chassis/Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

The following applies to all vehicles manufactured from 1979 onwards (inclusive) that are not of North American Specification (NAS) ¹.

The most reliable way to identify the vehicle you own is to look at the Chassis/VIN number. This is stamped on a plate found either in the vehicle or in the vehicles engine compartment and is unique to your vehicle. It is possible for you to 'decode' this number to determine a large number of things about the vehicle, including the model and model year.

As can be seen in the diagram above, the chassis number is a 17 digit sequence made up of numbers and letters. In the diagram 'x' represents a letter that changes on different vehicles, while 'n' represents a number. The first 3 letters are always SAL, indicating the vehicle is a made by Land Rover.

I believe its some kind of M62, but there seems to be different models
One site said it is 4398ccm
Six speed
Other sites say it’s a three speed

The table is not entirely correct.

My 4.6 litre V8 petrol P38A had the code SALLPAMD3MAnnnnnn (I can still reel that VIN off from memory Smile )

Note that in that decoder, the D indicates either a:
2.5L, inline 4 cylinder, petrol or
17H 1.8L, inline 4 cylinder, 'K' Series, Low Compression Leaded

Maybe that was the coding for Australia. I'll check a few other P38A VINs. Ron B. VK2OTC

I just checked with a friend who worked for LR.

Engine code B was for a low comp 4.0 litre V8; D was 4.6 litre Low Comp. The last years of the P38A came with a high comp engine and became J as per the list above. Ron B. VK2OTC
