United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Baltic Blue

I found that it spoiled my enjoyment of driving the car.
I felt very “aggressive “ always trying to get the revs up, but since having the mod done I drive in a far more relaxed frame of mind, and when I do get to boot it now it is completely smoke free even after many short journeys and town driving.
Previously it was embarrassing the amount of smoke it blew out as soon as I hit 2500rpm.

Regarding the 3.6, I BELIEVE the main issues are the intercooler to turbo hoses breaking down internally sending bits into the turbo- OEM hoses are cheap or can be replaced with silicone- and the oil feed for the turbos runs across the top of the engine- the heat causes slugging, starving the turbos of oil- replace or re-route

Not heard that theory before, but sounds entirely credible Bow down

The air cooler cools the air after it leaves the turbo, so I’m not quite sure I follow what you’re saying. The pipe work on the air inlet side of the turbo is hard plastic (with a plastic flexible coupling). I think you may be referring to the air cooler outlet hoses that are known to split? Any debri from these will travel into the combustion space (eventually) not the turbo.

Sorry if I’ve misunderstood

I do agree with rar110 regarding these hoses splitting possibly causing turbo failure. The split would cause loss of airflow potentially causing turbo over speed as the tin brains try to compensate 2007 3.6 TDV8

I found the smoke embarrassing and causing lack of acceleration on my 3.0 D4 before I did the mod. I almost only ever planted the foot jumping into 100 kph traffic from a stand-still and the misfiring combined with the smoke-screen was totally unacceptable so I had the 4.4 done as part of the purchase deal. As I wasn't prepared to do the 4.4 fix myself, it was going to be costly post purchase.

Well, I took a 4.4 for a test drive yesterday and was unable to provoke smoke despite a few excursions well above 2500rpm. It is difficult to be certain because of the privacy glass in the rear windows but I'm pretty sure there was no sign of smoke. I also checked the belt was sitting true on the idler and as best as I could tell, it was.

The problem is they've lost part of the service history - the early part. They have an electronic record (ie a scan) of the service book for services in 2015 / 2016 / 2017 but no book and no scan of the pages for 2013 / 2014 (it's a 2012 car). It seems extremely unlikely that someone would shell out for a car like this and then skimp on servicing but I'd like to get to the bottom of it. It has 3 services from Guy Salmon, Wakefield but according to the seller, they have no record of earlier servicing (and the vehicle changed hands just before the 2015 service so it's entirely possible it was serviced elsewhere by the original owner).

It's a 2012 Vogue with 67k and is up at just over £18k which I think it a very good price (having looked at a few older, higher mileage examples for more money).

Only issues I can see are a bit of damage to the side of the driver's seat (where the leather has either been damaged or worn - is this common?), early signs of rust in the rear wheelarches which I know is common and a tiny speck on the upper tailgate and one of the driver's seat adjustment switches doesn't work (5 of the 6 modes work). Apart from that it's in very nice nick. It's really only the service history question holding me back...

if you ring a JLR dealer with the VIN number they will look on Topix and see if the service history is on file...

If it is, they can print that off for you sir...

Are you Staverton side or Fews side of Gloucester sir?

Thanks Craig - you will be my first port of call if I do pull the trigger Smile

I'm the Staverton side I suppose - I'm actually near Cirencester.
