Cold Start

Dear Gents and Ladies,

I have changed all spark plugs (fitted original LR), but still my personal perception that something is wrong during star up at low temperature.
I would appreaciate hearing any thoughts on this https://vimeo.com/257082976

Regard,
Alex

I would not be concerned with the time taken or ease of starting. At such low temps, I’d say that was very good performance.

I would be concerned about the amount of engine noise until the oil warms up a bit. Have you considered using a different grade of engine oil to cope with such low temps? I’m not an expert, but would have thought there were options. Of course, anything you choose will need to cope with normal operating temps as well, that’s where modern multi grade oils come in.

I presume you’ve changed *glow* plugs, not *spark* plugs. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Dear Steveball,

thank you. Yes, you are right, LR changed glow plug. In regard to oil, I use oil Castrol Edge Professional C1 5W-30. Do you think this one might be an issue at low temperature start?

5W-30 is the correct grade of oil specified by Land Rover for this engine. I'm not certain whether that Castrol oil complies with the Ford specification WSS-M2C913-B or WSS-M2C913-C, but that's what LR tell us we need. The TDV8 is a Ford-derived engine.

However, at extreme low temperatures (and I definitely consider -22C very low), I would be tempted to got for a 0W-30, which will be less viscous at cold temperatures, but remain the same viscosity at normal running temperatures. Whether that's worth doing will depend on how often you experience temperatures like this.

Someone who is expert in the field of oils (such as Opie Oils) might be able to give good advice. Someone in your country, who is used to dealing with very low temperatures might also have good knowledge to share.

That's the limit of my knowledge, I'm afraid. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Steveball,

thank you. Usually we have normal temperature during winter season within the range +/-5 degrees. Only for a week we have around -15/-22. So 5W-30 should be fine.

bembo449,

thank you. In regard to injector, have your car ever experienced problems with injector under normal daily operation?
I am asking, because last Friday one of local indies checked all injectors. All of them operate within given range of figures and fuel consumption also within given range.

Wondered what engine we were talking about when you mention spark plugs.

Regarding low temperature engine oil. I know a guy on another forum who tests oil. He recommends the low temperature oil because they have to improve the oil quality to get it working at low temperatures, so it's better oil.

I don't think the oil has anything to do with the sound of that engine though.

Alex, may want to try some 2T oil. it will clean and lubricate full pump and injectors. I use 1/2 L on a tank full.

Nino,

Hi All,

I've been advised to restart up the glow plugs around 3-5 times. Here is the results:https://youtu.be/hyKsW1ldGlM
Seems better, but still not smooth enough. I guess, all injectors should be checked.

Regards,
Alex
