Air suspension 2004 TD6

Posted elsewhere, but with only one response, so please excuse posting here, and I know, I know about the subject.

I have an extremely bad back, hopefully temporary. This makes it very difficult to do anything on, in or under any vehicle.

The lights on my raise/lower switch went out and the display said "Air susp Inactive". The car drove normally, level and at a normal height.

I broke out my trusty Chinese BMW Scanner (PA Soft 1.4), which read

EHC -> 64/68 - Articulation-Plausibility
80/68 - Activity plausibility front right

I reset the faults with the PA diagnostic tool, the inactive suspension notice disappeared and the lights came back on. I then switched the magic switch to "Lower" and it seemed to have lowered the car, but it didn't seem to want to raise again, sitting there with the flashing light still flashing.

I loaded the wife in and we went to Sainsbury's. The vehicle seemed to be at the same height as usual, and the raise/lower light was steady in the "normal" position. But there seemed to be no suspension at all and every pothole or princess's pea that we drove over jarred my back and I returned home with nagging wife and barely able to move.

Reset the suspension again, the lights came on and I switched to up. It appeared to have risen, and drove OK but seemed high to get in or out. The up/down lights were out, so did another reset and switched to Down. The flashing light continued to flash even when the car was switched off and on again. Left overnight and the car now seems to be at the normal height and still level. Each time driving about 100 yards put the raise/lower lights out.

I can't do any work myself, but is the best bet to trust the scanner's faulty height sensor message and get a small local garage (good on Disco 1 & 2's) to change the sensor and check the wiring, or take it to the local indy specialist to have it on their proper diagnostics? The latter would be more expensive and involve taxi costs etc. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

They are a bit pricey as well, so if your garage can do it, do the DIY repair, both my fronts fell apart, but have lasted 3 years and counting since the repair.

If it is the sensor itself or the wiring.... .

Thanks again, Joe90. We are now floating on air again. Bow down

Took it to the local garage who is known good up to Disco2's, and left the printout of your repair in the car. He said that the joint to the height sensor had failed in the same way.

He said that he "went in from the other side of the joint" and replaced the bolt that way as it was easier. I'm afraid I have no idea what this means, but might be of interest. On reassembly he said the vehicle stayed on the bump stops, so he checked all the relevant wiring.

He has only standard diagnostic equipment, so delivered the car back to me on the bump stops with the raise lower light still out. I plugged in the laptop and BMW scanner, reset the air suspension and all came good.

Unfortunately, my back is still as bad, but at least it is no longer being jarred by every pothole. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????
