United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Zermatt Silver
Engine comparison

Hi all - so apologies if this is been done but I couldn’t find it...

I am after a break down of the engine options over the years to try to work out what my next step may be when I want a change.

As far as I’m aware there are 7 options,

BMW 4.4 V8
BMW 3.0 TD6
AJ 4.4 V8
AJ 4.2 s/c
AJ 5.0 s/c
AJ 3.6 TDV8
AJ 4.4 TDV8

Now I only really know about the top two, I know the 4.4 suffers from leaky gaskets and pcv issues, plus blocked oil coolers and eas for the gearbox not to mention the lifelong gearbox problems, and the chain guides failing. Not to mention valley pan leaking - overly complicated alternator failures

The td6 I don’t hear too much negativity about aside from the occasional turbo and the lovely gearbox which I believe was lifted straight out of a BMW saloon and dropped in with no consideration of weight changes etc so it will inevitably die at 100k...

The 4.4 AJ and 4.2 I know nothing about major issues with these, some say the valve seats are softer if using lpg but that’s all I see, I also believe from reading the gearboxes are better than the 5hp24 if cared for...

The two tsv8’s I don’t know why but people seem to think reliability is with the 4.4 not sure why I know one cracks oil coolers from reading on here also turbo go etc but not sure how much of a problem these really do have...

Any thing on here would be really useful and potentially for new buyers!

Cheers Current stable:
2006 BMW M6
2007 4.2 V8 S/C FF
Gone:
2002 4.4 V8 FF

I have not heard any horror stories but any car could be bad if not looked after previously, can't really tell you much but i'm sure others on here will be able to

The oil cooler issues on the 4.4 TDV8 doesn’t take the engine with it, whereas turbos stuffing up on the 3.6 TDV8 tends to end up with the engine lunching on them and needing replacement. Some say the 3.6 issues are less pronounced than on the RRS as there is more cooling space under the bonnet of the FF so less heat issues.

I spent more money and skipped the 3.6 due to possible turbo issues.....

You could map out the egr's on the 3.6 TDV8 and worry not. Dodgy EGR's start the turbo failure chain reaction. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

My 3.6 tdv8 has been great, now with over 270,000km. It’s been smooth, powerful, reliable, and relatively economical. However I’ve read good reports about the 4.2 SC and AJ 4.4 NA. Especially the later terrain response models.

I’ve not read a lot about problems with the 5.0 v8s. However, they sound a lot more complex than the earlier AJ v8s.

However, the pick seems to be the 4.4 tdv8, unless doing few km, then consider an AJ v8. ______________________________
