Dash cams...

Quick question,

The mrs keeps asking me to get her a dash cam for the range rover so I've started looking as they seem to have their uses.

Why are some hundreds of pounds whilst others are £20?

I've not cross referenced specs too much but they all appear to do the same thing ie, loop record onto an sd card.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Nextbase 412 comes top of the reviews. Halfords were selling them for c.£85 recently. Or you can upgrade to 512.

A bit like cameras in general - you can pick up a cheap one, or spend a bit more and get a good one or spend a lot more and get a better one still....

I've run BlackVues for many years - but the market is regularly changing.

More money will get you a better lens, higher resolution, better lower light capabilities etc.

Some come with a display - I'd rather take out the card & watch it on my laptop.

I'd suggest a dual channel unit that can record the rear view, too. Ron B. VK2OTC

Is there an efficient way of hard wiring into the dash without running the standard cable from the cigarette lighter?

To get USB power to the top of the screen I wired up a double 5v inverter, the unit sits in the overhead console. see https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Inverter-power...SwiBJZ5Xfd
After trying several cheaper cams I now use a go pro ripoff. After lots of research, I chose a DBpower ex 5000. About A$60 delivered with every accessory, you would ever need. It has a dash cam mode, 1080p res, a real 170degree lens and wifi. Bang for buck It would be very hard to beat. The footage is superb plus it is surprisingly discrete at the top of the screen Check out youtube reviews.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNnASWXW6Ks 2007 TDV8 VSE

Thanks for that info, Wayne. I've just ordered a couple of the USB inverters.

I can't find the camera at A$60 - I see then from A$100 to A$172 on evilbay. I'll keep looking. Ron B. VK2OTC

Looks like its probably been superseded. I just checked and I paid A$60.69 shipped on special last March. Be careful where you buy as there are now clones of the clones. I got mine direct from DBpower via aliexpress, here is a link to their store https://dbpower.aliexpress.com/store/23937...4e8104WVSg You might have to buy a windscreen sucker but all the go pro type mounts are interchangeable 2007 TDV8 VSE
