I have an intermittent fault. "Trans. failsafe programme enabled" I have checked with my IID but it did no show a fault. I had it checked by a local Landrover Independent with his "Autologic" but that too showed no fault.

I tried it again today with the IID when the warning was showing and I got Fault Code 0x59. I cannot find any fault code explanations anywhere that tells me what this code means. This suggests that this fault is not stored in the ECU. for some reason?

The Car drive fairly normal in this condition and only now and again to I get a gentle rise and fall in Engine RPM. The condition can last from a few minutes to maybe ten then it clears. Some days nothing happens, on other days it come and goes regularly.

I have sent this inquiry to IID. who I hope will reply and shine some light on the Code. If any body knows any thing about these Codes it will be appreciated. Range Rover Classic 1989

I have found several of the transmission codes diagnosed on the GAP IID tool relate to the legacy BMW codes rather than DTC’s.
If you cross reference BMW Code 59 it will refer to DTC P0720 Stall Speed output shaft speed sensor on transmission.
In this case Code 0x59 is quite likely the legacy BMW Fault Code relating to DTC P0720 (Stall Speed).
This fault is often mis-diagnosed as being internal slippage inside the transmission, with recommendations for transmission re-build or replacement. This fault code is actually the the output shaft speed sensor fault for either an open circuit, a shielding fault, or short circuited.
In the majority of cases, the sensor is found to be faulty, but the sensor should be fully tested to confirm it is the sensor that is faulty.
