Battery totally dead and key won’t turn and won’t charge

Went out yesterday as the alarm started going off only to find it totally flat. Last time I drove it was Saturday. I unlocked the door with the key and tried it in the ignition and it wouldn’t turn, I’m guessing this is because the battery is flat? Also I’ve had a new battery in the last two months as my last one went flat and it all pointed to a faulty battery. I’ve tried putting it on my ctec mx5.0 charger and it kept on giving me a green flashing light, eventually it started to charge but I’ve gone out this morning and it’s flashing red now. Surely I can’t have another dodgy battery, both Varta battery’s. Also is it possible my charger is faulty also or is it because the battery is so flat that it won’t charge?
(I did drive off once with it still connected damaging the quick release plug). 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

The key won't turn if the battery is flat enough. Sometimes when batteries are fully discharged (e.g. due to a drain somewhere) they can't be revived. You might need a diagnostic test to see if there is something draining the battery, though it could be a defect in the new battery. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Sounds like a knackered alternator to me.......

Are you in the AA/RAC - they will check for you

I had the RAC out last time it went flat end of October and everything checked out except for the battery. I suspect I have a drain Sad

I’m pretty sure all was ok till I did the 2012 facelift, the one thing that’s not been sorted is the LED fog lights that are pulsing, I just didn’t think that they did it when it was turned off so shouldn’t be a problem with the battery. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

I couldn’t do anything, I had no power at all. My mate popped round and we jumped it, took it round the block and it restarted and now I have another charger on it overnight. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

If your battery charged by a short drive i would guess your alternator is ok but use a voltmeter and look for around 14.2 + volts across the battery at idle.
i would then be testing to see if the battery is being discharged by a parasitic drain. You will need to wait for the car to go to sleep and the best way is to leave the tailgate open but close the lock with a screwdriver so it thinks the boot is closed, same with the passenger door and then lock it with the alarm fob and press the lock button again within 10 seconds to turn off the interior sensor and then wait for it to go to sleep, 30 mins maybe, and then it is a case of pulling fuses with the ammeter connected between the earth terminal and the vehicle earth point with the main battery earth disconnected.
i think i would connect the ammeter in place and then once the vehicle is asleep remove the battery earth cable where it attaches to the body which will then leave all the current passing through your ammeter. You can then start to remove fuses if you are still showing a current drain until it stops which will then indicate your drain if you have one

don't forget to unlock your door and boot before closing them, the boot is only left open to see if the satnav is asleep or if you want to remove the fuses in the boot but you could just start with the glove box fuses

Ok thanks for the explanation, looks like I will need to get the multimeter out at some point. I’ve got one of those solar chargers and I’ve ordered a new ctec mxs5.0 with the extension so may just leave that plugged in for now. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography
