[Wanted] Range Rover 3.0 TD6

Currently on the look out for a nice low mileage 3.0 TD6.

My budget is limited to around £10,000 unfortunately.

I'll therefore, be looking for something around the 2002 - 2005 model range I think.

Missed out on nice low mileage example recently so alas, the search continues!

Should be able to get any td6 you want with that budget, possibly 2.....

Seriously, I'd be looking at a 3.6 tdv8 with that kind of money to spend.

3.6 would be lovely but mileage is a big thing for me...would prefer something no more than in and around the 55,000 mark with a service history.

I would also consider a TDV8 if it fits the checklist!

I reckon a high mileage TDV8 might be less of a potential financial risk than a much older TD6 with what could be expensive gearbox issues looming on the horizon.

And of course, there’s the oft quoted opinion that a well used RR with a good service history is less of a risk than a lower mileage example. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

For that sort of year you better put a 1 in front 55,000.

Some of the most reliable cars I've ever owned have had big mileages on them , all car parts are designed with a service life,bearings, gearboxes etc, that life is shortened with cold use as their design life is at a set temperature

I'd much sooner buy a car with 100k on that's spent most of its life in top gear on a motorway for 1/2 of the price of one used for 30 miles a day on the school run being bumped up kerbs, run constantly cold, stop start, turn turn ,first second third second first

More money will buy you a lower mileage car but that guarantees nothing in reliability terms

everybody told me I was mad to buy a 2003 150k TD6 with a knackered engine a couple of months ago, but today I'm driving a running driving MOT'd HSE with no warning lights on for peanuts

It had a recon gearbox in 2012 , suspension has all been done, 2 previous owners , I saw the engine running in a 330D before I bought it with 90,000 miles on.

too much emphasis is put on mileage with cars, it's not miles its how its been looked after

Got to agree, buying a 15 year old car with 50k miles on it is asking for trouble.

Unless the owner did a dozen 300 mile journeys each year then put it in the garage of course. But chances are it will have been used in a city and for short journeys, neither of which are good imho.

Mine is a 2007 3.6 which has done 12k miles a year, it's now on 132k miles, so the perfect average.

2010 3.6 TDV8 with 110k miles for your budget would be a much, much better bet imho.

Basically, if you do high miles what does it matter?

Both are going to be worth Censored all in 2-3 years time anyway. Porsche 911 (996)

History is key. Buy A well maintained higher mileage car with a good history!

Ideally if you can find a late 3.6 then you will have a better car all round than a td6. Whereas in a TD6 you will have gearbox issues (potentially) in a 3.6 you will have alternator and turbo issues, potentially, the rest of the car is the same give or take.

But the trade of a 3.6 over a low mileage TD6 is worth it. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

How many turbo issues have there been on the 3.6 in a full fat?

I have searched and searched and every post seems to say turbo issues, but only ever found 2 people who have had issues?
RRS it is very common place though. Porsche 911 (996)

Personally, if I had 10k to spend I wouldn't go anywhere near a td6.

55k or not they have loads of common issues, ie - blocked injectors, injector wiring looms, gearboxes fail for fun, just to mention a few. Plus it's a really old, underpowered agricultural engine that bmw have been using since the late 90's

3.6 v8 is miles more refined. Tubos are the biggest issue with the 3.6 so you probably want to buy one that's already had replacements.

I've got a high mileage TD6 and keep thinking of swapping it for a 3.6 but the only benefit for me is that the td6 is a fairly basic diesel engine meaning home repairs / servicing are straightforward. With the 3.6 I'm not so sure that would be the case.

I'd love a quieter more powerful engine though....

Tbh, it’s less the turbos and more the hoses and EGR valves. There isn’t a massive catalogue of failures, which is why I say possibly... the turbos were more prone to failure in the RRS due to packaging issues. In the 3.6 the seem a lot less prone to failure than in the sport however they do fail on occasion. There are several reasons the turbos fail, one of which is a blocked turbo oil feed pipe, another is a knackered EGR.

Search on here 3.6 turbo failure, there are several examples which come up. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Agree with NMJ. For a 10k budget I'd spend 9k buying it and a grand sorting it.
Dodgy egr's. cause the turbo issues on TDV8. Sort them and worry not. Some see them as a consumable part and just change them around 90k. Personally I'd map them out for less money.
Get a nice 3.6 TDV8, sort the egr's, change all fluids, diffs, transfer box and gearbox oils. Get silicone intercooler hoses and then just enjoy the car. They're superb. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal
