Although Dexron VI ‘officially’ replaced Dexron III when the licences expired in 2006, it does have a lower viscosity when new:
Dexron III (Texamatic 7045E) : Kinematic viscosity = 7.4 mm²/s at 100⁰C and 33.8 mm²/s at 40⁰C
Dexron VI : Kinematic viscosity = 5.8 mm²/s at 100⁰C and 29.5 mm²/s at 40⁰C
If your valve blocks are worn this could potentially give problems. However, the shear stability of Dexron VI is much better i.e. it maintains its viscosity for longer. In other words, its viscosity will be higher than Dexron III after a period of use.
I’m not aware of any other reasons that Dexron VI might be an unsuitable alternative.
