I got stuck !!!

Got stuck yesterday.

I was following a service rd when it just came to a narrow end with a small ditch then the start of the new rd ! (dry and about a foot deep and 2 foot wide) no problems i thorght. I rased the suspension and aproched a little more than 45 degrees front right went down and and up the other side etc, with the front wheels across the other side and one rear in the ditch and the other on the other side, but still on the rd is where the problem started. It just spun that wheel and as there was hardly any weight on it it had no grip. I changed all the settings but i keped spinng the wheel with no traction and the wheel with all the grip had now power.

So, if you can understand my setup above ! can you let me know what i was doing wrong. 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE

F**KING about for ages, ended up droping the pressures right down in all the other tyres to lower the car at thouse corners giving the free wheel a bit more bite. 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE

Had you cross axled it? In theory with 4wheel ETC it shouldnt be possible. But maybe your brakes are poo.

Wierd!
If only one wheel was spinning, this shouldn't be possbile.

Did you try switching off traction control, and using rock crawl?

EDIT
sorry I should have asked - do you have terrain response in your model?
also, do you have the 4x4 info where you can see what the locking diffs are doing?

You want TC, otherwise your wheels will spin freely in mid air. It's DSC you want to turn off - because this cuts engine power.

Did my head in as the day befor i had it in sand mode and every thing worked well, i was going past others that were diging themselves out, including defenders, g wagons etc.

i need to go sit in my car and look what the button says, but yes I think its DSC I am on about.

Regardless of whether you have DSC or TC on or off, if you have locking centre and rear diff, you should be able to tolerate one rear wheel off the road anyway

You needed to switch of DSC and give it FULL THROTTLE !!! (even if for a short time)

That gets all the traction electronics working properly. Thumbs Up

Also Mud & Ruts setting encourages both wheels to spin (not slip) to remove mud from tyre treads.....

ah, hang on, the locking rear isn't necessarily standard all over the world. It is here, thankfully. Didn't help when all 4 wheels are spinning in river sand tho Embarassed

I believe the Owners Manual describes various off road techniques - perhaps you should give it a read?

I don't fully understand the benefit of a locking rear diff over traction control. Other than the fact that it seems antiquated tech, it just seems that it would create more problems than it would solve.

TC will lock a spinning wheel that is hanging in the air (combination of heigh sensors and ABS sensors) and apply 100% of the power to the wheel with traction.

A locking Diff allows no slippage between left and right sides - this means 50% of the power will go to each wheel...

We already have auto locking centre diffs (have done since 1989) so front rear traction is always 50/50 split.

well not really, cos the diff doesn't just lock up, it gradually winds up the lock depending on the requirement

any I am no expert either, so I am off to RTFM as well

Locking rear diff was only standard on the the 4.2 SC here in the UK, I believe. It was an option on all other UK models.

Also, you cannot select that it locks - controlled through the Terrain Response settings and electronics.

However, I think they all have e-diff (as well as locking centre diff). The car should brake the spinning wheel to provide power to the wheel(s) with traction.
