Anyone tried a batteryless jump starter? (capacitor based)

Seems to be a clever solution for jump starting compared to battery based units.

From what I can tell, it will draw power from a low level battery and after a couple of minutes then magnifies it through the capacitors to give you a short term full power to start the car. Seems a great idea as most of the issues with the fatty are the voltage drop causing a low rather than a dead battery.

This is a Sealey one, but there are others around.

The battery jump starters have been around for a while. But my post was about the new batteryless ones using capacitors to give a short burst of power from a low car battery.

Sounds really clever as long as the car has a small amount of power left or you can access some power to charge the pack.

I would guess that the 1 star review is probably a Range Rover owner with a completely flat battery. There are lots of videos showing how it works. It is not a battery pack, but a system that takes a low power supply and boosts it to a high surge for 5 seconds to start the car.

From research the 800a version is good for Diesel engines up to 2L and the 1100a version can do up to 3L. According the the reviewer in the youtube link, he almost managed to start a vehicle that was twice the size of the spec sheet maximum and it will also depend on temperatures etc.

This guy seems to rave about the capacitor starters compared to the battery ones.

Such a simple set up with loads of potential. I like the hand crank option, perfect as a last resort for boating or expeditions.

Here is that guys V2 model.
