Gearbox - AGAIN!

Well here I sit waiting for the RAC. Clunks and vibrations from underneath, trans. Failsafe prog on dash and come to a halt. No drive forwards or reverse. Switch off engine, restart, forward drive but no reverse. Not going to risk moving. This is a replacement box fitted 3 years ago. 30 000 miles. Not happy. Time for a total change of car I think.😡

Had to put transfer box in neutral to get it off breakdown truck. Seemed to be jammed n mater what position selector was in. Once off and fuse removed did not want to go backwards when reverse selected but would go forward! Would torque converter jam it up?

The problem with the TD6 GM transmission is the valve body is quite often overlooked during the refurb which is the root cause of the TC failure and so when everything is replaced if the valve body isn’t upgraded the reduced pressure on the TC causes premature failure from what I gather. Sometimes they fail after only 10 k miles.
When the TC fails on the GM TD6 box all the debris is sent into the transmission trashing that also.
Did you get any warning ?

Not sure if this is your cause but some information here.
I would imagine it is still economical to repair depending on where you go.

Seems to me like these gearboxes are very poor, every one Ive owned (in either BMW or RR) have failed. Yet the Mercedes ones Ive never had a problem with

I get the impression the GM boxes are quite poor but the ZF boxes can at least be reasoned with

Well I got the FF back today, gearbox was re-built. Problem was an output shaft which is hollow that had what i can only describe as a spiral shear. It looked like a bog roll tube that had been opened up! I'm trying to get a photo.

Rrphil has highlighted this before - have a search and you will find a great photo of exactly this on one of his posts. Thumbs Up
