Td6 glow plug relay

Hi all,

My IID tool is flagging up a glow plug relay fault.

Simple enough I thought but I'm not actually sure it's faulty.

If I put the multimeter on one of the 6 glow plug wires coming from the relay and turn the ignition on I'm getting nothing although the dash is displaying pre - heating.

If I then fire the car up the relay clicks and I get 12volts from all of the relay glow plug outputs until it times out.

This isn't right is it?

Surely the relay should activate when I initially switch the ignition on in order to preheat the engine?

What could be wrong?

I have had that fault since I got the car, can probably just ignore. Glow plugs not really necessary in our climate. However I usually wait for the pre heat light to go out before starting, doesn't seem to make any difference if I don't .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Cheers Joe, question is though, why?

Surely that relay should be active as soon as the ignition is switched on. I'm wondering what's stopping it.

My car starts on the button every time but can be a bit Smokey as most diesels are if you start them without waiting for the glow plugs.
