Removing Sill/Upper Footwell Lamps

Has anyone been able to remove the sill (RAVE)/upper footwell (Owner's Handbook) lamps in the manner shown in the Owner's Handbook (page 232)?

I even tried taking the side cover off the dash and getting my hand in to push the lamp out but to no avail. I had to get my wife (smaller hands) to put her hand in and remove/replace the lampholder when I replace the bulbs with LEDs.

I'll try it again. I don't want to damage the finish on the end piece. I even tried removing one when I had that wood-grain finished cast alloy end piece out but couldn't budge the lamp assembly. Ron B. VK2OTC
