200 radiator cap or 140

can anybody shed light on which cap to use 4.4 v8 53 plate bought one on line and was sent a 140 mine being 200 after fitting 140 it was leaking no mater how tight I made it . I thought it might be a faulty cap . I seem to be going through header tanks about 1 every 18 months or so even after fitting 80deg thermostat. If she is meant to run on a 200 cap will fitting a 140 be ok anybody done this ? read a post what said if you run a 140 the water pump would not turn properly cant see why as pump is belt driven anyone changed 200 to 140 ???

A 53 plate is meaningless to anyone outside the UK. Rolling Eyes

Thanks Stan. I used to see the same 53 plate type of thing on RangeRovers.net back when I was Admin over there. It was just as annoying then! Laughing Ron B. VK2OTC

I have had a 140 cap on mine for years with no problem and no leaks or split tanks.
If you go into the hidden menus you can read your actual water temp while you are driving as when I did the 80 degree mod mine was getting hot although it wasn't showing on the gauge it was getting up around 115 deg C.
Mine was coursed by insufficient bleeding and when I raised the front up it helped and also my auxiliary pump on the inner wing has stopped working which can also make it difficult to bleed as can faulty seals in the valve it is attached to can make it more difficult
I would check your temps and go from there

Cool, I found it a lot harder to bleed with the 80 deg mod, I had the front raised on a sleeper with the cap off and kept burping the top hose and the bottom hose next to the stat housing and all without chopping my fingers off and it has been fine now for months

Bleeding a system is always a worry for me.
I always drill a 1/16 hole in the thermostat, That might stop them getting warm in the UK
Volvo trucks ask for a 1/8 hole to be drilled in one of their thermostats

it's definitely a worry in the early Petrol range rovers, the P38 only had to smell a cup of tea and it would overheat and fubar the engine - so i have read anyway, and the FF 4.4 is not keen on getting too hot.

Overheating was always a worry with them.

I removed the thermostat from the bottom hose, fitted a sputnik in its stead and then a lower temp thermostat in the inlet manifold - an easy mod with the GEMS engines.

I have a 4.4 Petrol about the same age as this.
I have fitted the 80 Deg Stat mod and run a 140 Cap with no issues at all.
Just towed the Caravan 500 miles last week in mid 20Deg weather and it didn't miss a beat Cool Cool
Checked levels the other day as we're off on another 500 mile trip with the Caravan and it didn't even need a dribble. Cool

OK 2 months with no water problems changed cap took my time bleeding . However a little
little set up problem with lpg was pointed
out.my vaporizer was set higher than my expansion bottle thus any air in system wold be trapped there causing all kinds of problems..A simple bracket lowering vaporizer has cured this fingers crossed.
