Are these gearbox symptoms terminal???

Morning all, so after 140K miles of almost constant towing the gearbox has thrown in the towel. (2004 TD6). Have done a search but cant find similar symptoms which are;

Heading up a medium incline with trailer, drive started to slip and car came to a halt, wouldnt move back or forward. Would select gear but no drive, smelt like a burnt clutch would back in the day. Now been recovered but garage cant look at it until mid week.

Any suggestions/insight greatly appreciated, if its of any use had a gearbox service 10K miles ago

I thank you Thumbs Up

If it's torque converter then I would say it's recon box time as when it lets go it fills the GM transmission with debris and if its transmission internals then same outcome I would say.
I suppose you could be lucky and the fluid just fell out but I'm thinking probably not.
The only other thing I can think of could be front diff recall issue but I think it would still let you engage forward and reverse

At 140k I'm guessing it's the second transmission anyway and if they recon the transmission then make sure the valve body has been checked and ideally fitted with the sonbax kit.

RRPhil is your man of course, I'm only recalling some of his advice, hopefully correctly.

If they drain the fluid they will be able to tell a fair amount as to what's going on.
You have GM 5L40-E transmission if you want to have a shop around ..

If there is a horrible grinding sound it could be the front prop shaft shredded the splines. Mine did it last week, relativley cheap to fix.

Don't worry, it's in safe hands if you took it to Cooter Wink
