Having a few days in Cornwall in the tin tent, and I'm amazed how many Transporters there are
There's some nice looking ones as well
Got me thinking, if they're powerful enough, they'd make a good tin tent hauler. Plenty of room for all the we take with us.
What they like on fuel?
I'm up to 300 squids worth already in the ff.
Any thoughts?

That's around 3 tanks Wogger. is yours a 3.6 or a 4.4?
If 4.4, depending on what you're towing, (finger in the air) I'd say you'd get 425-450 mile range per tank?

People here (not towing anything) have got over 500.

And you've still got to get back from Cornwall? Maybe you have a fuel leak?

I filled up before leaving home and out 108 squid in, I think Sat nav said it was 340 miles to destination, it was very windy on way here and I used cruise most of way, I stick another 50 quid in before I got here coz I don't think I would have made it !!
I've stuck another 100 in whislst here and we've been all over the place, so I'm lying, let's say 250 and I'll brim it to get home, is that bad for a 3.6 v8?
Ff been faultless all the way, just seems normal to me

Not too sure on typical 3.6 consumption...
Maybe us 4.4 diesels enjoy better range.
I've never had 500 myself though.

Comfortable five or seven seat van (with varying numbers of windows) good for towing........

Merc W639 Vito in 3.0L V6 with auto gearbox has a very car-like drive; I had one for three and a half years.

Masses of torque with the added benefit that you can use MB commercial dealers for parts and servicing and those places are often open 24hrs a day.

Doesn't have 'the cool factor' of the surf/active lifestyle brigades Transporters but that engine/gearbox combo is sublime.

well Ive never looked at any van and thought i prefer it to an FF ( bar the rare SYncro model ) they will get stuck in a field and certainly wont go where an FF will and of course its STILL a van at the end of the day not a luxury SUV

Transporters are lovely to drive, very car like.
Long wheel base is more comfortable ride, although less easy to park. Never had a problem, just what other colleagues have said.
The 4motion version is getting more common.
I had a2010 dsg 140bhp lwb van.
Great vehicle, like most things let down by vw dealers. However Thant’s another matter.

This was used regularly to tow up to its 2.5t limit, never below 30mpg whilst fully loaded and towing. Usually around mid 30’s if you tried a bit harder.

Would happily swap back to one instead of any of my Land Rovers.

I used to work for VW CV for nearly ten years so know a lot about them.

Common issue is wearing out the offside front driveshaft and stub shaft, the camshafts wear out on the 2.5 litre PD engine around 200,000 miles but can be sooner, 5 speed gearbox and flywheel was a weak point on early T5's, early 2.5 litre engines would bore wash themselves due to injectors leaking and require engine replacement. Also remember that I had customers who ran 200 of these so saw a lot of common issues every single day without fail. Also the nearside rear tyre is susceptible to wearing out quickly due to load distribution in the rear of the van. They are good, expensive but good.

The last company van I had was a 2.0 140PS LWB 4MOtion window van and with five seats in was great. Would have one again if the opportunity arose.

I have had three VW Californias and they are a great car alternative if you also want the odd weekend away but the rides is not as good as a full fat although better than some cars...
