this pic from the WM indicates there are 4 temperature sensors on the exhaust , hence my amateur deduction that its probably not the thermostat,

I think the German marques have the same, but they control the regen itself, not tell it the car is up to temperature enough to start a regen. Porsche 911 (996)

Don't know how you are getting on with this but I ran a thread on a very similar DPF problem.
I hate to be the agent of doom, but I suspect you are going to be handing over £££££ for a new dpf.

After lots of messing around with main dealers and Landrover CRC who all took me as a monkey and didn't want to know, I was advised elsewhere that any TDV8 that has had the turbo oil leak problem and not been fixed fairly quickly, then the short life of your DPF is already set in stone. You were lucky that it could be regen'd if only for a while, mine was goosed full stop and nothing would bring it back to life.

How LR got away with not doing a recall on the turbo leak thing is beyond me...pretty much all 4.4 TDV8 (in the affected engine number range) will suffer it unless modded. It almost certainly has a knock on effect of killing the DPF prematurely. yet LR tried to BS me that a DPF only has a life expectancy of 50k and the oil leak was nothing to do with it.

Hmm, I certainly agree that LR should have done a recall or subsidised the turbo drain mod, but am not sure about the absence of it leading to the DPF filling and having to be replaced. I have had an oil weep on the second turbo for maybe 13,000 miles now, when last checked it was not getting worse and it is just being monitored, not least as I have been told there is no help from LR for the mod. I have never had a DPF light or problem, but most of my driving is 'oot the road' and I'm over 2,500 rpm at some point on many journeys so oil does not build up in the turbo. Perhaps I have just been lucky, but I think many of the problems will be the use of diesels for short journeys with lots of stop-start, rather than the drain issue.

Incidentally I'm touching wood now... Only Range Rovers since 1988

Mine was very smokey before. I got the mod done and I have never seen a DPF warning, but since I had it done I have never seen a hint of smoke.
To my mind though, the biggest advantage has been that I now don’t need to constantly trying to get the revs up and now very rarely get over 2000rpm, making it much more enjoyable to just enjoy the torque and power when I want it.
Having said that, all that smoke passing through the DPF and exhaust must have caused some build up of soot. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Found this which, although from VW forum, goes some way to explain the thesholds between a yellow DPF warning, red DPF warning and "completely screwed" scenario:

Active ‘regeneration’ is when the ECU intervenes when the soot loading in the DPF is calculated to be 45%. The procedure lasts for about 5 – 10 minutes. Specific measures are taken by the ECU to raise the engine exhaust temperature to above 600°C, these include switching off the exhaust gas recirculation and increasing the fuel injection period to include a small injection after the main injection. The soot particles are oxidised at this temperature.

The ECU will trigger a regeneration process, if for some reason this is aborted, ie. customer slows down, stops etc, the process will be resumed when regeneration conditions are once again met, above 60km/h (38mph). This will continue for 15 minutes.

If after 2 attempts of 15 minutes, a successful regeneration has not been possible, the loading will increase. At 50% soot loading, the ECU will continue to maintain maximum exhaust temperatures of 600°C to 650°C to cause a regeneration process. The system will try to run a regeneration process for 15 minutes. If unsuccessful, the system will repeat this process for a further 15 minutes, if still unsuccessful, the DPF light on the driver display panel will then be lit.

The owners handbook states, the DPF symbol lights up to indicate that the diesel particulate filter has become obstructed with soot due to frequent short trips. When the warning lamp comes on, the driver should drive at a constant speed of at least 60 km/h for about 10 minutes. As a result of the increase in temperature the soot in the filter will be burned off. If the DPF symbol does not go out, the driver should contact an authorised Volkswagen repairer and have the fault rectified.

At 55% soot loading the DPF light is lit on driver display panel. At this point the customer should follow the advice in the handbook. If they ignore this information and continue driving the vehicle until the soot loading reaches 75% without successful regeneration, additional warning lamps will light up. At this point the customer will also be complaining of lack of power, etc.

At 75%, regeneration is still possible with the use of the VAS tester. Only when the loading is above 95%, is it necessary to replace the DPF unit.

It's the soot level / DPF load numbers that drive the regen process that I found interesting.

And - yours is a great reminder that says don't use DPF cleaner additives. I'm so tempted though...

Perhaps your son will know the answer to this question?

If it becomes necessary to remove the exhaust to get the DPF cleaned, can they cope with it in 1 complete piece, or does it have to be sawn up into sections and repaired with sleeves and clamps. ?

Hopefully we will never suffer the problem, particularly because we are so aware of the need for a regular decent run.

just phoned him Mike and he says it's dependant on the particular vehicle but generally just the dpf part can be separated from the exhaust ...sometimes the exhaust system might have to be dropped down to get the dpf off ...

if sent to him for cleaning, the cost is around £200'ish... ... - .- -.

I got to have a good long look underneath mine yesterday whilst it was up on a 4 post ramp and I can confirm 100% that the DPF and silencer box are in 1 complete piece made from stainless steel.
It must weigh a fair bit , and I would guess at least 7 ft 6 inch in length, possibly even 8ft.

Would be good to know it, even at 8ft it could be cleaned if need be.
I think on another post somebody had to stump up for a new one.
Which, by the sound of it would be quite a big chunk of exhaust section
Otherwise cut out DPF and clamps etc back in as you say Mike.
