So, folks, will I manage with a diesel?

Three year old 405s are looking rather attractively priced these days BUT just those running on diesel. Even my man-maths cannot run to a proper petrol engine, so find myself actually thinking about something powered by a thing you find in lorries and submarine engines. But I am so tempted...

I live in London so lots of short trips - plenty of time in traffic, of course - with the less frequent ventures out of town.

What think?

I'm in the big smoke myself - with a 4.4TDV8 - I love it but the DPF is clogging up a LOT. Cheers, Greg

dpf will clog up unless you give it a good run once a month. if you cant manage that id stay away from diesel. im a petrol head, love petrol but i found the tdv8 adequate in town and on motorways, obviously its a trade off you dont get the noise and its pointless revving it out but the torque makes up for it in a way.

I’m a big fan of big diesels, but the combination of a lightly stressed diesel, fitted with a DPF, being run almost exclusively in city traffic is a recipe for trouble. Sorry Sad

I wonder if there’s a difference in the price of petrol 405’s if they are being sold well away for London?

Reading the OP’s post would suggest that it’s mostly stop start town traffic.

Tbh,for city driving,I wouldn't even entertain the idea of a modern diesel.

What you may save in fuel will be sure to be spent on repairs, many times over.

When people think of London, they usually think of rush hour, Central London and 30mph roads but as we know, there are several parts with dual carriageways where a 15-20 minute run at 50mph is easily accomplished.

Only you will know if you are able to do this regularly.

Thanks gang. All probably explains why they're cheaper (ahem, if that's the right word).

That said, I can fairly easily do a 50 mph run if that is indeed a possible solution.. can you tell I'm trying to justify Very Happy

If that's close to you then go for it.

I'm 30-50mins (50 if traffic) from a 50mph stretch so it's quite a hassle when the yellow DPF light goes off.

When you get a yellow you need to do it straight away otherwise it goes red then it goes into restricted mode and you need to go to a dealer/mechanic to clear it.

The engine is sublime, effortless and sooo much torque.
Very economical too. Averages around 18mpg city / 35mpg motorway.
Which is unbelievable for a 2.5 tonne tank.

Greg Cheers, Greg

I’m amazed that 15-20 minutes at 50mph would make any impression!

Even at 70mph, it’s doing less than 1,350 rpm and I’m not sure what good even that’s doing Rolling Eyes

I did my last one in 9mins at 50mph.
It chucks extra fuel in to get the DPF temperature right up
but it needs to air flow at 50mph to keep it from catching fire.
. Cheers, Greg
