I'd say sound insulation. I'd just glue in a sheet of closed cell foam 10mm cut to the shape. It will help strengthen the plastic. You can buy it with a foil backing to reflect heat. ______________________________

Thank you. That is useful and agrees with what 'foam people' have told me. So I shall give it a go - cost approx £30.

I stripped off what was left of the foam and cleaned up the surface with iso propyl alcohol.
