England 2005 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue
Engine cover

The plastic cover on top of my 4.2sc has finally disintegrated. Specifically, the foam padding/lining has dropped off and is very brittle so I can't really bodge it face on very easily.

I am not clear of the purpose of the foam lining; it is for sound or heat insulation/dissipation or is simply to stop the plastic cover rattling and chaffing. If I knew, I could source replacement foam and fix it in place.

Any views? 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

I'd say sound insulation. I'd just glue in a sheet of closed cell foam 10mm cut to the shape. It will help strengthen the plastic. You can buy it with a foil backing to reflect heat. ______________________________

Thank you. That is useful and agrees with what 'foam people' have told me. So I shall give it a go - cost approx £30.

Alternative is new cover at £130-£150. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

I stripped off what was left of the foam and cleaned up the surface with iso propyl alcohol.

I then lined the cover with this sticky back high temperature foil covered fam at £30.

Cut a small piece to fill the recessed central portion of of the cover, then one large piece for the whole engine cover, inclusnd the sectins that come down the side of the engine, taking care to trim it back round the edges and oil filler. Poked four holes through with an awl for the mountings. One hour in total. I am pretty low down the evolutionary scale when it comes to cutting and sticking and so it is probably not the most elegant piece of craft, but it is better than the crumbling foam and spending £130 on a new plastic cover.

Seems to fit well and have driven it for some time now withut any apparent ill effects. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4
