Is the general concensus not to buy a 02-04 unless it's had a recon gearbox ?

02-04 isn’t my specialty, but it’s the box in the diesel that has some concerned. I think the petrol ones are fine (but 5 sp vs later 6sp). If the rest of the car is good, you could always factor the recon box price into any offer you make.
