Hello, I am new to the forum and I am really hoping somebody out there can help. I have a L405 2014 SDV8 Autobiography. I have owned it for two years and I have been very happy with it. However over the last few months a very annoying whistle has developed when I depress the brake pedal. I have been to two main dealers and reported the problem which I was hoping the warranty would take care of. Short story is that the first main dealer thought it was a lubrication problem, told me that they had lubricated it and guess what? - it made no difference at all ! I then took it to another main dealer and they said that they had examined a car of similar age in their sales stock and it had the same "issue" therefore it was characteristic of the car! (Couldn't believe that one!) - end result - I am no further on and everybody who gets in my car says "What is that noise / whistle / high pitched noise" !!

The best way for me to describe the noise is a hydraulic whistle rather then a mechanical whistle if that makes any sense?

It doesn't happen all the time either - which is equally mysterious.

It does tend to happen regularly when I have to brake sharply !

Anyway it is driving me mad and I am at the end of my tether!!

I took the car for tyres yesterday and a rather keen and young ATS technician said "it might be your vacuum" - which I am not sure what he means??

Do you mean the squeal often heard on disc-braked cars? Ron B. VK2OTC

I think your keen young ATS technician may be on the ball. The chances are the whistle you hear is air being drawn into the rear of the brake servo during braking. You can normally hear this air if you listen for it but I've never heard a whistle. Could be something to do with the air filter. You could look to see if the air filter is clear of obstruction.

thank you so much for that reply. It would seem that you were right on the money with that analysis. The car has just been for a service and I gave them your message - result - the filter was changed and also cleared out and now the annoying noise has gone away! Thank you so much. I can't believe that two LR main dealers - Hatfields in Liverpool and Farnell in Bury were both incapable of finding the solution to the problem.

Just shows the power of this site!
