Yeah if I was soldering pipes and the like I probably would, but this is simply a fitting I’m asking about.

The current set up is a copper pipe with an elbow and a threaded nut soldered into that. screwed into that nut is a 90 degree male/male elbow which has some kind of cement sealing it. When I unscrewed it, there is a rubber seal inside so it’s not a taper fit. I have another 90 fitting that needs to go in (male/female seen in pic) but I was wondering what the cement is and how I can position the fitting to line up with the hob as it screws in facing the opposite way by the time it’s tight.

If you seal it yourself you can't test it so get a plumber. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20
I swear you will never see anything like this ever again....watch it..drink it in.

Last time I did a similar job I used this, never had a problem. Test with soap solution on the joint afterwards or if you want to do it properly buy a manometer and check the whole installation

With all due respect if you can't work out how to make that straight forward connection you shouldn't be touching it.

I can work it out. It’s simple enough. The fitting I have will go straight into the the copper pipe fitting. My query was that if I tighten it, it’s facing the wrong way. I don’t want to turn it another half turn to line up as I may strip the thread. If I back it off half a turn it’ll be loose.

Looks like PTFE tape which is for water, when I worked for BG (many years ago) hobs had to be rigid connections with isolating valve. As others have said.... get a fitter in.

It's illegal in the UK to do any work on fixed gas pipework so you'll need to get a gas safe registered engineer to do the connection for you. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

PTFE tape comes in two types. White pack for water and yellow pack for gas. It's still white but it's a lot thicker. Simply called gas tape. Winding the right amount (trial and error) allows you to rotate the fitting so it's tight AND also ends up in the right position.

However: your fittings are not correct right now. So especially don't add another fitting to connect the two chrome elbows, you actually need to take away one of the elbows looking at the pic. Which gives you a problem because they won't spin on.

You can't have fitting on fitting on fitting it's too many possible points of leak. You need to get from the supply copper to the black hob pipe with the minimum threaded fittings.

I would take the chrome elbows and an A4 print out of the picture to your local plumbing merchant. They can usually put a fitting or two together to connect anything to anything. Don't go to Screwfix.

While you're there you can pick up a can of leak detection spray which is not expensive. Spray liberally. to test. There needs to be a gas tap near the oven too.

Get a gas safe registered fitter to do it or at least check it. Cheers, Greg

If you don't get a gas safe engineer to sign it off then you are breaking the law.

By all means turn off the gas, bleed out the system and fit it, but before you turn the gas back on, get an engineer out to certify that the system is holding pressure and not leaking, and register the appliance on the gas safe register. It will come in handy if you ever sell the house too.

What you need to do there is take the male iron elbow out of the existing fitting, unsolder the female iron from the existing Pipework, rotate the new elbow 90 degrees, fit a new female iron to the new hob elbow with gas tape or a fibre washer if suitable, then solder back on to the existing Pipework.

You can't joint those 2 fittings together.

If you can't solder get a gas engineer out.

If you need to ask, get a gas engineer out

If you aren't a gas engineer, get a gas engineer out.

Have you seen what a gas explosion does to your house....... probably not worth the risk for £50..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
