Oil Leak - Further Info please.

After an investigation by my local authorised LR dealer they have identified a slight oil leak from the 'rear main'. Can anyone give me any further explanation on this please?

The joint between what and what is leaking for instance?

I have seen the leak from underneath (whilst vehicle was up on a mate's lift) and it is more of a 'weep' than an outright dripping leak. Still, it's an expensive repair.

The o rings fail and let oil weep through- the leak will only get worse the longer you leave it. The o rings are only about 30p each x 2 and the repair takes around half a hour.

Hi,
I'll think they talking about the crankshaftseal, the seal in the torckconverter or the front seal in the autobox.
If so they have to remove the autobox.
Hope its not that. Expensive job to do its a lot of work.
But maybe its a leaking valve-cover seal?

OK, Thanks both. Yes, LR have quoted me £848 to repair the leak - 5 x hours labour. If they have to remove the gearbox, will they have to change the gearbox oil in it?

I was thinking of getting this done anyway, so two birds with one stone, etc.

Not sure which engine you have there. It looks to me like ZF6 transmission fluid, which will probably be the O rings on the electrical sleeve.

A straightforward fix if that is the case....

In garage talk the "rear main" is the seal at the rear of the crankshaft where it comes out the back of the engine. On some engines it's just a round seal that's removed and a new one knocked in, on others it's a sump off job and the rear mains cap removed.
On all it's a gearbox out job.

Now the bad news, it's not uncommon for the crankshaft to have worn where the seal runs, sometimes repairable with a speedy sleeve, sometimes not. Some garages will just replace the seal on the worn bit and you're back to square one in a short while. Crying or Very sad

Thanks rodp. So I'll need to make sure that if the crankshaft is worn, it's done at the same time as the seal? Useful advice.

Also, does this mean the gearbox fluid will have to be replaced as a result of removing the gearbox? I presume yes, but I've read some are gearboxes are sealed, so a bit unsure.

They'll lose some fluid but not all.

Nope, the ZF6 on the 4.2 jag engine uses Lifeguard6 which is clear/straw coloured. If the patch develops over days it's almost certainly the sleeve...

Chapter II
Exactly as the gurus said
The part was changed and also the transmission fluid

However, the following occurred:
When starting without problems, the car in D, does not change speed
Passed the change to manual, does not exceed 3
And transmission failure appears.

Back to the mechanic

Guesses?

Either :-

    1) The new sleeve isn't seated correctly (the electrical connector then gets an intermittent or partial connection)
    2) The garage didn't follow the oil level fill procedure when adding the replacement oil
    3) The garage has broken some of the wiring when they did the sleeve
    4) The transmission has been damaged by static electricity when the sleeve was done

In order of likelyhood...

I would go with 1 on that list.

if it was working correctly before then they broke it.......

they need to fix it. Getting the sleeve into position is not really easy... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
