DD 295 Transfer Box removal ???

Hi All,

I need to remove my Transfer Box on my 2006 S/C today because it's gone on self destruct.....probably input bearing (as per RRPhil's strip down post)!

Any tips please? I've read everything I can find on Topix (308-07B Transfer Case, Removal) and it is almost as though it's implying that the stealers split the T/box in situ and remove only the section they need to work on.......surely not??

I'm either going totally stupid, which is possible, or having some form of Bank Holiday meltdown & would probably be better off cutting the grass/hedge like the rest of the world seem to be!

Yes I'm lying on my back with the car up on ramps, not a lift, which is far from ideal but the best I can do!
Please be gentle with the roasting I'm about to receive....!
Thanks in advance,

I have had a look at RAVE for earlier cars ( V8 ), seems it goes like this:

1. Drain TB
2. Remove rear and front prop shafts
3. remove heatshield
4. Support gearbox
5. Remove crossmember (Gearbox subframe)
6. Remove "snubbers" (?)
7. Lower gearbox, but do not allow GB to hang on selector cable
8. Disconnect shift motor multiplug and oxygen sensor mounting
9. Support TB
10. Undo bolts connecting TB to GB
11. remove TB

Can't be that much different on an '06 ?

nb does also suggest removing viscous fan, I presume to prevent it fouling the radiator when you "lower" the GB .

Thanks for your advice Joe. I don't feel quite so lonely now! Thumbs Up Smile

I've got the prop shaft bolts soaking in penetrating oil at present.....they are small diameter (especially on the front) and stupidly tight.

I've bought a tool similar to the special tool quoted (303-1069) but having not seen the real thing I don't know if the Amstrong adaptor I've bought is long enough because as yet I can't see the top 4 TB to GB bolts!

The TB oil I drainrd out at 186644 miles was black, nasty, stinking and similar consistency to old diff oil:

The clean, thin "genuine" LR TB oil I put in last week went from :

To this at 187085 miles:

So black, nasty rubbish but thin after only 441 miles!
This oil is soooo thin it feels thinner than water when it is new and if that input bearing is only splash fed I do wonder if it gets enough to lube it properly......??

Cheers,
