auto front and rear defrost program

in the climate control menu there's options for AUTO control of the front and rear screen demist. (don't confuse this with auto control of the air conditioning)

these are not actually referenced in the owners manual (apart from the traditional on/off manual buttons). Does anyone know the conditions in which they auto switch on and off again?
