Strange steering lock error

Yesterday morning it was not possible to turn neither of the 2 keys in the ignition in our 07 TDV8. (We have the touchscreen ffrr, where the key barrel is located up on the dash.) I tried several times to turn the key, also after locking and unlocking the ff with the key fob. Since I were in a hurry (flight to catch), I had to take the other car to the airport. Both keys fobs have new CR2016 batteries, the car battery is in very good condition, alternator working fine (2 years old).

After coming home yesterday evening, I tried again to start the car. Worked fine !! Both keys could be turned in the key barrel (ignition) with no problem, car started fine. I then read and reset the fault messages from the IID BT tool:
"SCLM-Steering Lock
- 0x1C Unlocking error
-0x17 Locking operation error "

This morning the key barrel worked fine as well.

Could this be the start of a "steering column nightmare", or could it just be an occasional error? Anyone experienced this steering lock error just once, and then never again?

The reason for asking is that we need to help our daughter to move to Bergen (further north on the west coast of Norway) this weekend, and for such a relocation we need a BIG car. I'm wondering if we should take the chance of driving this (otherwise fantastic) ffrr for that long journey, or if we have to rent a big car....

I have a 2007 MY08 tdv8. Very occasionally it does something electronically unusual. Maybe 1 or 2 per year. In your case it's possibly a random glitch.

Alternatively the gearleaver may have been moved slightly back. If not fully in park it might affect the key operation. The auto stick location does affect the key lock. For example if you turn the car off while in drive the barrel won't let you remove the key, until you move it to park. ______________________________

Thanks - let's hope so. There haven't been any similar problems since this happened Tuesday morning. So now we plan to use the ff on the journey this weekend.

This happened on mine a few times then adventurely the thing stopped working altogether.

The issue was the electronic module at the bottom on the key barrel. part was about £60 bu it had to be coded by landcover to the emu's.
