Diff Breathers

i have a 06 RR TD6 and intend to do some outback touring in Aust, There is sometimes a need to cross rivers and creeks and i was wondering if the RR has diff and gear box breathers or is best to get some after market ones fitted, i have had a look under and i cannot see any thing that looks like a breather, but having owned Land Crusers and Hi Luxes i am not sure what to look for on a RR. Sorry if this topic has been covered i could not find it in search.

Welcome to the forum gonfishen.

Yes, the transmission, transfer box and both final drives all have breathers fitted with tubes designed for wading.

The breathers for the transmission and transfer box emerge above the bellhousing between the engine and bulkhead. They have a characteristic hook on the end.

On the 4.4 V8 petrol model the front final drive breather tube passes through a slot in the camshaft cover – not sure about the TD6 though.

I did some river crossings yesterday (in company with three 110 Perenties) and was a bit concerned )for me, not them - they had snorkels!). I know my P38A had breathers but was unsure of the L322 as I've seen breather kits advertised for them. (sorry no pics of the crossings where the water was over the bonnet.)

I'll get mine onto a hoist this week and double check. Could be a good time to do a fluid change on the diffs and transfer case, too. The trans has just been done whilst investigating the trans failsafe program error (it was cracked solder joints on the transfer case shift motr potentiometer). Ron B. VK2OTC

I note that the recommended fluids aren't available from Castrol.

I got the Castrol transfer case fluid from a local parts supplier. For the diffs, I used Penrite PRO GEAR 75W-90 (Full Syn.) GL5.

When I drained the diffs and transfer case, there was no sign of any water ingress which was great. Ron B. VK2OTC
