GM gear box oil

Hi to all,

Here in Portugal I can't find the proper transmision fluid (Texamatic 7045E).
Which is the best similar to this one?
The last time that I've changed the oil I use MANNOL Dexron III Automatic Plus. Is this one OK?

Cheers
Antonio

Texamatic 7045E is a Dexron III spec. fluid.

Whether or not the Texaco fluid has ‘special additives’ e.g. to reduce the catastrophic valve block wear in the 5L40-E, is impossible to say as it would be a trade secret. BMW specified Texaco ETL-8072B for their later (identical) M57/GM 5L40-E combination in the E53.

Theoretically, of course, these fluids are now superseded by Dexron VI

Thanks Phil for your reply,

So, is advisable that I drain all the Dexron III and fill with Dexron VI?
Cheers

Antonio

Because all the Dexron III licences expired in 2006, GM no longer endorses any fluid that claims to be Dexron III so anyone manufacturing it is no longer regulated to stay within the original GM specification. There is therefore a slight risk with ‘new’ Dexron III but I would have thought that fluid badged by one of the major oil companies is unlikely not to conform.

Dexron VI does have a slightly lower viscosity (which may not be a great thing if your valve blocks are worn) but the viscosity will be more stable throughout its lifetime. On balance, if you’re unable to source 7045E, I personally would go with Dexron VI as GM insist that it’s backwards compatible.

Others may have a different view Smile
