Hi guys,

When driving over bumps i notice a heavy clunk coming from what i believe is the front left.

Any idea what it could be? It seems to be when the suspension extends, e.g. dropping down off curbs and so on.

Start with your ARB drop links.

Might be a good idea to do the MOT thing with a big pry bar on all the suspension components to see if there is any movement

Also just worth a check that everything is tight, nothing loose either on the suspension or inside the engine bay .

Ok the the ARB drop links are a little loose where they connect to the ARB. How tight do these need to be? Is it a case of just tightening them up or worth replacing the whole bar and bushes? Any idea on parts numbers and where I can source a pair?

But if the anti roll bar bushes have worn you'll be in a bit of a pickle cos as far as I know LR don't sell the bushes alone, you have to buy the whole anti roll bar ..... there my lack of mechanic knowledge causing trouble. The bits that are warn are the rubbers on the end of the drop links. I've just googled and it seems the come connected to the bar for less than £25 a pair. Might as well just replace the whole piece for that price. Here's to hoping it fixes the knocking!

Now i'm going to ask, is it better to have jacked the car up to do this or have it on the floor?

As with all suspension jobs it's better to tighten up with it under load...ie, all 4 wheels supporting the car.... this however isn't the most practical way of changing the drop links, I usually try to jack the wheel as close to the wheel.... sometimes this isn't easy and it is better to lift the car an place an axle stand under, remove the wheel and then jack up the suspension so that it just lifts the car off the axle stand, but only by a millimeter!! just incase!

That way the suspension is sitting at it's resting height  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

When the car is on a flat level surface the drop links aren't under tension or compression so can just be unbolted with the wheels on the ground.

Done it twice, and it's not a really bad job, just a bit of lying on the floor. Be careful not to damage the rubbers on the new ones and you will need a spanner with a thin Head on it to get purchase on the spindle to do them up from memory. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Most have had trouble with third party drop links. May be better to go with LR parts from dan@duckworths. .

The LR ones are Lemforder at least the ones I got from Dan were a while back. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Don't forget that the washer is a spacer.... otherwise you'll be doing the same job again in the near future  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
