Only use manufacturer spec oil?

Castrol Edge is the LR approved oil.

Is that what the majority use as I've seen a car that has, on different services, had 5W 30 fully synthetic, low ash oil, ranging from Petronas C2 to Mobil 1 ESP... Does it actually matter what brand oil it is?

it doesn't matter one jot , as long as the spec is the same as specified or higher.

its ALL marketing . BP pays JLR to push their product

The Castrol Edge is quite often on sale anyway. I just buy the right stuff and put it in the boot for servicing. Halfords and Tesco sometimes have it on offer for less than 20 quid / 4 litres. Compared to dealers charging north of a tenner a litre it's half price or better.

Site sponsor Opie Oils can also offer alternatives which meet the spec. Again, they have offers from time to time.
