Engine Coolant Tempreture Sensor

Just changed the air filter, and asfet removing the intake pipe, noticed thast the sensor fitted into the thermostat block has broken off. By the looks of it, this happened quite a while ago. Given that I cannot get the sensor out of the housing,, just wondered what downsides there are to not having it connected.
