Hi guys,

Not sure how long the tow bar as been left in but it feels like it's rusted in now. Any tips on how i could remove it besides tying to a tree and flooring it?

Try heating up the holder up with a blow torch and then give the tow ball bit a tap or greater with a hammer.


Had to do this with mine first time .

Assuming you have got the bolt out it is just a case of hitting it with a heavy hammer, they tend to be fitted dry and then bond to the armature with rust. Clean and grease the stem before refitting, it makes removal much easier next time. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Just applied lots of WD40 in the hope this loosens it up.... here's to hoping.

I would try penetrating oil rather than WD40...

Apologies but my knowledge of this i guess is a bit thin on the ground.... I thought WD40 was penetrating oil? I have GT85 as well? Or a lots of firearm gun oil like this stuff http://www.uttings.co.uk/p103759-bisley-silicone-gun-oil/

You need the oil to be mixed with a release agent, more a penetrating action.

Any of those, applied liberally, left for 24 hours etc will help. But you will likely still require a hammer. Something I did when I got mine (I changed from removable to farmer's hitch so I had to get the receiver out).
1. Acquire a good strong rope.
2. Find a good strong anchor point.
3. Tie rope to anchor point and towball.
4. Low range 1st, get lots of tension into the rope. Apply handbrake and PARK.
5. from underneath, ensuring you are not in the firing line, heavy lump hammer or a dead-blow hammer, hit the bar from behind.

That's how I got mine out. But, I can't over-stress the point about keeping EVERYTHING out of the way for when it does let go. Pets locked in the house, kids, etc etc. Mine made a large dent in a 60ft holly tree. If it had hit me I would be dead, no question.[/b]

A small container full of diesel is good to use for penetrating oil in such cases.
It penetrates very well but leaves an oily film which prevents further rusting..

Mine was stuck when I got it, soaked in penetrating oil battered with a sledge hammer - still wouldn't budge - so I just cut the bottom off and left it there. Geoff
