Engine Goes Bang - £28k to replace!

My father's 2010 3.6L Vogue has just blown up. I don't have all the details to hand but suffice to say it's been to an independant and a franchise dealer and the prognosis is that a new engine is required! £24k plus labour...

It had covered 100k miles and would probably have traded at £12k or thereabouts, so not really worth sticking a new engine in. The question is what on earth does he do with it now? Stick it on ebay?!

I'd say get the exact details of the "blow up" and what damage has been done or what needs to be replaced and take it from there.

Garages saying it needs a new engine can mean various things and a deeper look may not be quite as bad as it first sounds, or you're being told.

beware of eBay folks saying it can be done on the cheap, it can't.

it really does depend on what exactly has gone bang, if its eaten a turbo, then it could have damaged a piston and bore, which would need at leat a new bank, which you can't get easily. Possibly why they are saying that it needs a new lump.

An engine swap, It can be done and has been done on here by some brave folks, I would start looking for engines from similar vintage cars at salvage yards etc. If you can find one in running order then it may make it a lot more economic. Putting a brand new engine in a 7 year old car doesn't make sense economically. If you find a running lump then while it is out it probably worth changing the turbos and EGR valves on it before it goes back in the car, an expense by good for peace of mind. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

When I read posts like this I Censored myself, my ff is exactly the same age and mileage, she's been running sweet as a nut for ages now, pulls the tin tent brilliantly, but and it's a big BUT, do I get rid while the goings good ?

Thanks, I agree.

He's since been onto another local specialist and they have a similar car that's just be bought in after a side impact accident. If the engine isn't damaged they've quoted £12-13k all in to do a swap.

I'd take it to somewhere that knows what they're doing, that price is Shocked

you can get a new re-con engine from LR for 8.5k, add a couple of turbos and EGRS 3k

So £15-16k all in? That's for an old engine as well no?

See here's the problem. One of the quotes is from a LR main dealer, biggest in the county, the companies 'public face' if you will, and you (as a dealer?) recon they don't know what they are doing? Doesn't exactly inspire much confidence in JLR as a whole does it.

Edited to add - I see you're not a dealer! Apologies! The point about the main dealer still stands though!

I just did a quick run down on some of the main figures, the engine is a refurb unit from LR, a brand new unit is circa 13k, labour prices will vary massive on dealers depending where in the country you are or if going down the specialist route.

Have seen many TDV8's lunch turbo's, and run very lumpy/misfiring.

ALL of them have run fine after replacing just the turbos Thumbs Up

Just my humble opinion but get the damage assessed , mine recently had a turbo snap the impeller shaft , luckily for me the loose end fell into the exhaust. The smoke from the exhaust was incredible because the oil was being pumped into the exhaust. I got the turbos reconditioned, 700 euro and the whole job cost less than 1800 euro. And the indie changed a park brake module at the same time ( big enough job )

Obviously if engine needs to be changed that's a different thing but maybe the problem isn't as bad as it may seem.

A good inspection of what is wrong is the place to start and then go from there. 2015 4.4 AB
