4.2 supercharged, new owner.

Hi folks, just after a bit of knowledge for a new purchase.

Ive previously owned a l322 4.4 petrol(04) so am aware of the complexities of these motors.

Picking up a 4.2 sc (07 facelift)at the weekend,2 owners,lowish(73k) miles,full mdsh,beautiful condition,a lovely looking motor!

Having it from a big dealership,as part of the deal ive had it serviced according to land rover specifications, using genuine parts, also as a stroke of luck had the gearbox fluid changed as there was a slight leak on the transfer box.

Its full dealership history and it looks as though its been cherished,is there anything specific to the 4.2 sc that you recommend be done as a preventative measure and anything specific to look for on these?

Cant wait to get it!

Welcome, good choice of motor. Thumbs Up

Only thing I'd say is check the aux coolant pump is wired the correct way round! Apparently loads left the factory incorrectly wired (including mine as it happens). The problem tends to show itself as an intermittent (always the best kind of problem), 'Reduced Engine Performance' notification. Several services and inspections failed to uncover the problem, but thanks to those in the know on this forum, problem now solved! Life is what happens while youre making other plans.

Excellent. One of the best engine / gearbox combos in my opinion. Nothing much to worry about on the 4.2 SC other than the aux coolant pump as mentioned above.

More generic things are front EAS airbags and sticking calipers. They do like to be used so once everything is at operating temperature don't be afraid to give it full tilt!

Enjoy, sounds nice. Looking forward to the pics. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

Sounding quite promising re reliability Very Happy

It's funny sticking calipers and airbags crop up on them,as it failed it's pre mot on those two items and the dealership are replacing the faulty units.
What is this aux unit I need to check and what am I looking for?

It's joining a v8 tvr in my fleet so I'm used to a bit of spannering Laughing

Thanks in advance folks Thumbs Up

Just make sure you use it they don't like sitting around airbags are usually about 100k miles or 10 years and then they might need replacing I did mine on 110k but it has been pretty good for last nearly 4 yrs and 80k - it is now on 145k so enjoy

After a gearbox failure on my last one at 95k and at my own expense,i thought it prudent to pay extra for a 2 year warranty that covers everything up to the purchase price of the car.

Hopefully won't need it (fingers crossed)

You'll be pleased to know that the SC has a different 6 speed gearbox which is very tough but not faultless, read RRPhil's excellent posts on here regarding solenoids...... 2006 4.2 SC

I was looking at tdv8's initially but as it's a 3rd vehicle and I won't do mega miles in it,I thought I'd be better off with a 4.2.

Thanks for the helpfully replies folks Thumbs Up

Great cars, I love mine.

Mine is going to tick over 100k on my way home tonight.

My gearbox is not great, it has started to slip under hard acceleration and when coming to a stop it bangs back down into gear so got to work out when and who can remove and refurbish the gearbox eventually.

cheers and enjoy Alex

Had mine from 39k up to 59k now. Apart from the above mentioned Supercharger coolant pump, had little to no major issues Thumbs Up

Still absolutely love it & always feel an occasion when driving it. Enjoy! Jordan

How do I check it's working ok?

And what symptoms would I be looking out for if it was knackered or on it's way out?

Is it worth swapping it as a matter of course?,a genuine Bosch unit is coming in around the £120 Mark so no big deal.
Many thanks again folks, friendly bunch on here ain't cha! Thumbs Up

You can get to the plug and check the wiring on the pump.

I tried to do this but it was a right faff getting at the bottom of the pump where the plug is, so i left it.
Few months later tried to accelerate up a hill and got the dreaded BONG and 'Reduced Engine Performance' message. Got the pump replaced that weekend at my local Indy..Only took an hour.

Your's might be ok though! Jordan
