Beware when overtaking parked cars

Some years ago (pre ff) I had a brush with a white van man - well his door mirror. The road I was on was straight and a good 5 car widths wide. There was a long line (about ten) of parked cars on my side and none on the opposite. I was about halfway along this line of cars and at least three cars had gone past in the other direction with plenty of room when I saw a transit coming towards me. I slowed to a stop as I could see he was quite a way towards the centre of the road and travelling quite fast, but I had nowhere to go when his door mirror smashed mine off the car. The other driver was very apologetic but didn't quite go to the length of admitting what was blatantly his fault and we agreed to 'go through the insurance'. BIG mistake. As there were no witnesses and I admitted to passing parked cars my insurance company dropped me like a hot potato saying that I MUST have been over the centre white line (I said I would dispute this and offered to measure the road) and consequently had put my vehicle in an unsafe position. They 'suggested' that I should not go through insurance and that I should pay for the other drivers mirror as I would loose out otherwise. Needless to say there was a look of surprise and incredulity on the faces of the other driver and his boss when I told them what my insurers had said as I handed over the money. Every time I see someone coming towards me and overtaking parked cars on their side of the road it makes me wonder if they realise that if anything happened their vehicle would literally be uninsured...... QUID FACIUM TIBI

Wow, nothing ceases to amaze, sorry to hear this when they are at fault.

I have just read Reg Locals book on advanced driving (he taught the top level police drivers and is respected as one of the best) he said you should never overtake / pass anything without the width to avoid, I.e. Pass a cyclist and they must have enough room to just fall over and not be squashed by you or enough room for a door to open wide...I know this is not the same but I guess this is where they are coming from?

Gutted for you.

If you both arrived at the hazard at the same time then priority would be with the driver not having the hazard on their side. If the driver with the hazard on their side arrived and proceeded first then they would have priority.

Remember your insurance company is in the business of not paying so will say anything yo stop you claiming from them.

Not only that but now they know you've had a knock they will still "adjust" your premium/NCB and you'll have to declare it or the next 3 or 5 years on your renewal forms. Doesn't matter to them that they didn't pay out and you didn't actually claim....just sayin. Mike - MPx
