Yellow engine check light?

I had the yellow engine check light come on today. Checked fluid levels - nothing wrong. Anything else I can do to clear it or is it a trip to the dealer.

A check engine light suggests a problem with your engine management system, often relating to the emission side of things.

Levels of fluids won't effect this.

You should get it to a dealer as a matter of urgency as if you are over-fuelling you will destroy your cats (there are 4 so get expensive to replace) and if you are under-fuelling you can burn your valves.

To avoid spurious warnings the fault has to generally occur 3 times before you get the light, so don't be thinking its just a one off. For future it may be worth getting yourself a USB OBDII code reader, this will allow you to read the code and re-set it after you've fixed the problem

Lambda Oxygen Sensors are a common culprit but your car is quite new for CAT damage....

Could be a loose sensor though hit by a lump of ice....

Safe to drive to the dealer? It came on when I was about 5 miles from home (steady not flashing). Dealer is about 8 miles away.

If engine running as normal I would say yes.

Very kind offer. I am near Cambridge.

The car is running perfectly. I only noticed it on the dash. The only thing I have noticed is that it takes a fraction - and I mean a fraction - longer to start. I put it down to the battery not being at full charge (lots of heated seats heated screen, heated mirror action recently).

Nothing drastic. Some fault that required new software to be downloaded. £100 and an hour of my time.

Could be much more expensive than that as I test drove a 4.4TDV8 when I was there. Me want.

did you ask what software was upgraded, i find it hard to believe just because there is a software update for said module and that they want to charge you for it, why should your car need it..
please find out what and why... V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

I can perform this software upgrade on your car for a mere £75. I wont tell you what it does or anything about it. You'll just have to believe I've done it - and in reality all I've done is clear the fault code.

I smell Bullshit!

I am not sure of all the details. IIRC, the fault code was that one of the cylinder banks was running hotter than the other, showing a petrol mix fault. There was a service bulletin that recommended a software upgrade for the ECU that would prevent the fault from reoccurring. I took that to mean that the cylinder bank wasn't hotter, merely that the ECU had gotten confused and that a software update prevents this from happening again.

Have I been fleeced by a main dealer?
