I am thinking of getting a dash cam fitted to the 405,
Has anyone on here done so? What did you fit and how did you run the cables?

I have a Blackvue Dashcam fitted to the L322 which was hardwired as part of a purchase deal so no unsightly wires
The installer was a bit peeved when he found out what the installation element was compared to what he was getting so I presume that a decent auto electrician could do you a good deal independantly of the purchase
The only issue I have is that the dashcam records to a micro SD card which is a pain to extract and view from - if there was an option of downloading by Bluetooth or uploading to a Cloud happy days 2009 Stornoway Grey Vogue TDV8

The latest Blackvue ones do now have wifi so you don't have to remove the SD card to download recordings. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

I am torn on these, I have read quite a few threads where there has been an accident and if the police are called they confiscate everyone's dash cams....I know the theory that if you have done no wrong then you have nowt to worry about but what if you had been over the speed limit but some numpty caused a fatal accident and you ended up also having the finger pointed and your own equipment buried you?

Equally there are too many scum bags who cause accidents on purpose or claim no fault when it clearly is their fault...then I would want the camera on my side.

Any thoughts as the self incrimination side of things?

Would it not help you in that situation and prove that your speed wasn't the cause of the accident? The camera doesn't lie so if you were "buried" with the cameras evidence then surely you would be to blame ?

I keep a spare micro SD card to hand

TBH I'm not sure I could swap it quickly enough if pulled over, but after a bump with time to wait, I could get it swapped.

Why not just loose the sd card (they are small enough to get lost very easily) a full functioning camera with card but no footage has got to look worse than one that you didn't know needed a card

I guess you have to hope that you are able to remove it (not maimed or dead) and that no one else has one.

My card has old recordings on it, so I would assume that there was an issue with the camera overwriting the SD card.

You're actually supposed to format the cards on a regular basis to avoid such an issue as it does happen.

The only disadvantage would be no opportunity to re-introduce the evidence if it turned out to be in your favour.

There was also a thread on here a while ago about a camera that was confiscated and the Police wouldn't return it for ages - even though it proved the person was clearly not at fault and his insurance company were about to settle to his disadvantage They wouldn't even provide him a copy of his own footage

Be ok if you can swap out the sim and decide when and if you want to submit the sim, wonder if the courts would not normally want to self incriminate or would they just take any opportunity?

I was talking to ex met policeman on holiday, his wife had been taken to court for doing over 100mph, on advice she admitted to 94mph and got a big fine (over £1k) and a long ban, if she had been stopped with a dash cam would that have helped enforce an over 100? (Not arguing, just do not know the answer)...funny thing was that the day after the ban she got a fine for having previously driven in a bus lane come through the post and he went mad....next day nother bus lane FINE arrived.

not every dashcam has a gps module so no speed will be recorded... ... - .- -.

The higher end ones seem to have gps as a bonus, thinking about it gps is only really useful to prove you were within the limit or how close you were if someone else was at a huge speed differential.

I notice one allowed you to format to blank from an iPad but obviously it would need to be in the unit, in signal and powered up.

Maybe the benefits outweigh the small potential down sides? And if worried disable or don't have GPS speed recording?

They wouldn't need GPS to figure out speed, could be very easily calculated using time and distance traveled. I guess if everybody is speeding round and killing people then a dashcam isn't for you....
