Insurance renewal time

Are the best quotes from the comparison web sites, or are the best ones standalone ?

Any recommendations?

Seems to be a black art to me.... I tried companies that other members posted really great renewal prices, only to find that against my details (9 yrs + no claims) those companies were very high.

There are also a few major insurers not on comparison websites.

I went with Aviva in the end. Got a reasonable premium but quite high on the excess...

I tried comparison sites, brokers, the big firms - all different. You can't beat legwork IMO. I also found an article on moneysavingexpert that advised to tinker with your profession. I was surprised!

Proving it's a black art!

. Cheers, Greg

Actually, try Adrian Flux, a broker, seems fair.

I cycle between Aviva, Direct Line and Tesco and always use quidco to get around £50 cash back each time.

My usual tactic is to spend a lot of time online with comparison sites and direct insurers sometimes playing the "job title" game to see the differences as it's all about slotting yourself into one of their "standard risk" pigeon holes. I also include getting quotes from my existing insurer this way.

Then when I have found what I think is the best deal for me I set aside an hour or so with a coffee (or Rioja depending on the time Whistle ) and ring my existing insurer (assuming I am happy with them). First I go through the whole hassle of telling them their renewal price is too expensive and what is the best they can offer, haggle that to its lowest point including asking for a supervisors "discount" Shocked

Once I get to that point, if its better than anything else then I renew. If not, then I hit them with the "but I have just got a better price off xyz". Then we haggle a bit more, then I throw in other stuff like switching around which car is the main one (I insure 3 together) and varying mileages etc.

I think by that point they just want me off the phone Rolling with laughter so I usually get a really good deal.

As has been said, nothing beats the leg work (bit like buying a car......how many people walk into a dealers and pay the windscreen price Shocked )

Done some leg work.

Existing insurer is coming up cheapest to renew.
They are offering down from £810 last year to £670 this year.
Business use included.
Admiral.

But the leg work was an eye opener.
I have travelled the world a little, and it seems all insurers are now asking how long you've been permanently resident in the U.K.
Because I did a 9 month job in Germany a few years ago...I have not been permanently resident in the U.K. for that long.
But I am as much a birth Brit as my neighbour. Born British. Never held any other passport other than British.
Why do insurers ask about residency without asking about change of passport status...or ask whether the domcile changed. My domicile has always been British.

Probably the only advantage of getting old....

Self and wife to drive the SC fully comp, total excess £300 - best quote I had was £193.49 and the one I chose was £208.05 with Hastings. I doubt its very good insurance, but I paid premium premiums with premium companies for years and what few claims I had were appalling experiences so IMO no "peace of mind" on offer at any price. I now go pretty much as cheap as I can get and expect the claims experience to be naff...but hopefully not too often! Mike - MPx

But they were both fascinated to know if I had been resident in the U.K. Since birth.

Is it just me..but is this a question to enable insurance companies to be biased against immigrants....but they don't ask the question if the proposer has a British passport and has never had any other passport....
