This was beginning to sound more and more like turbo whine, although it was difficult to determine precisely where the noise was coming from, so I took it up to my local garage this evening. Even with it over their pit it was difficult to locate the noise but eventually a long screwdriver held against the ear and on the turbo confirmed it was the culprit.

Going to call C R Turbos tomorrow to see if they can do me an exchange one.
