There's something about the Classic RR that once you've had one you want another......until you remember all the bad things about them |

Think there's something quite charming about it though. I remember tr old joke that LR designers heard about german car manufacturers locking a cat in their cars over night. If they came back in the morning and the cat had suffocated then the seals were good. LR copied it. Came in the morning and the cat had f£&@ed off.

The first Range Rover I drove was a 3.5ltr NA V8 in Dubai (that is Dubai when it was Dubai and not a city on the moon) in 1976 - it was one of the first batch of 10 cars to be exported to the Gulf. All were the 2 door model with in white with the most awful tan coloured leather that looked so like plastic that Mercedes would have been proud of the copy of Benztex plastic leather. LR didn't offer Aircon even as an option on the cars so they got shipped out with aftermarket roof top aircon units and there-in lay a problem! To save space in the cargo hold we built up the stow until there was just enough room to get the cars under the tween decks on a floor built out of plywood sheets on top of the other cargo - several of the RR's went in there and the rest were stowed in the hatch square under were the hydraulically operated tween-deck pontoons located in the closed position. Those 4 cars under the tween deck survived a 3 week passage out to Dubai and 6 months at anchor off Bahrain before being discharged at Dubai. Once the cargo stowed onto of the tween deck was discharged the pontoons were opened and there was an awful noise of grinding steel and braking glass................................. and when the pontoons had fully opened there in the hatch below were 4 roofless and windowless Range Rovers. It transpired that the information about the height of the cars had been taken from the owners manuals and they of course had been modified with a 9" high tin box on the roof. So the first open top windowless RR's were delivered to their Emirati owners in 1976. I did however get to drive one of the undamaged RR's and vowed then that one day I would own one. It was 2003 before I bought my first RR and it was an early L322 TD6. I still love the "Classic" Range Rover, the lines are just so "right" and have never really aged even after 40 years the 4 door still looks good (even if they didn't drive too well and had their problems!) 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes |

My mate had a classic V8 with a straight through exhaust with a single cherry bomb silencer, sounded like a nascar at full chat...
