I had a VW Beetle in white similar to the pic with a Porsche engine - was fun to chase the Golf GTIs at the redlight Twisted Evil

I had one of these.

The woman, not the car - obviously.

Yes. Quite a go-er, but her sister was even better.

Back on topic, I'm not sure I'd go with a big 4x4 or an automatic for a first car. Better to learn on a manual. Something that has modern crash protection, ABS/DSC/Traction control, less momentum.

Young drivers push the limits. They don't have the experience to get out of the problems they get themselves into. You want something that is forgiving.

I'm not keen on the A Class, but the first question is perhaps what would be normal and acceptable in his social circle, and then maybe one of the safer cars he identifies could be tried.

Beyond that, based on my young self, I would also worry that 500bhp would have potential for accidents or convictions. If your son is paying the running costs the RRS might be a daunting prospect, and at least in the UK many insurers would decline to cover a young driver for something like that.

On of my friends has supplied cars to his daughters and imposed a restriction on the number of young passengers that can be carried - it seems the case here that the risk of accidents is notably higher where there are three or more in the car. Only Range Rovers since 1988

A lot of the kids I know that have been bought flash cars as a first cars have had accidents. I don't know if the A class is good or bad. I do know that I wouldn't chose a RRS. I bought my son a Mini and my daughter a Fiesta.
