Years ago we had to do a customs clearance for an aircraft collector in Galway. He had bought a MIG ( not sure which model ) and he flew it back across Europe and had to be escorted by each country's airforce. When he got to the UK he landed at an RAF Base in North Wales and collector was refulled free of charge and asked to fly flat out over the Irish Sea with the RAF attempting to keep up.

^^ Being a PPL myself, and also having had a lesson in a jet Provost I can imagine the fun that would have been. Just the call sign when talking to ATC would have been enough to prick up a few ears.

That would be the Pilatus PC-9's with a top speed of 593 km/h (368 mph; 320 kn) They were bought to replace both the Fouga Magister CM-170 with an earth shattering top speed of 715 km/h (386 knots, 444 mph) at 9,000 m (30,000 ft) and the SIAI Marchetti SF260 with a more modest top speed of 441 km/h (236 knots, 276 mph). |
