Can anyone advise me how I could check the service history on a car I'm looking at. I only have the number plate, I don't know which main dealer it came from or any other history etc??

you will only get the service history from the dealer that did the work .... ... - .- -.

I feared that. The car I'm looking at apparently only has 3 services done in its 85k miles since 2009, with 1 gap of 45k. I can't imagine anyone would let a car go that long, I'm thinking it could just have not been stamped for whatever reason. I hoped I could maybe find out what it's had done at main dealers in its first 3 years at least.....

Time for detective work.....

Is that owner listed on the V5 ? You could find their local MD - also try whoever did the service prior or after, people tend to stick with the same place

Assuming you can get any of that information from the seller.....
