Diff wear

When I changed the front and rear diff oil recently (at 150k), here were fine ferrous deposits on the magnetic drain plugs. On the front diff drain plug it was approx 10mm thick and slightly less on the rear diff drain plug.

I have been wondering, ever since, whether this is significant, especially as I am hearing quite a pronounced whine from the front, perhaps also a sign of wear.

Has no one any similar experience or thoughts? 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

Thank you.

I have some spare oil, so I will do another change to see if there is more debris and investigate a service exchange unit. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

A badly worn front diff has now been diagnosed. Even after two changes, the oil remains full of fragments and the metallic whine has become more pronounced. service exchange diff £1,100 + VAT at local indie. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

Sorry to hear it Sad at least changing the fluid again showed it up before it left you stranded somewhere and caused more damage. Do find out what let go though and if changing the fluid earlier could have saved it for you as could help others on here in the future Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

After my first front diff was replaced with a genuine LR part by my local Indi, it failed with loud whining getting worse and oil leaking from the main bearing. Having waited five months for the part, it was a little disappointing. Having waited a further five months for another new diff, all well and fingers crossed that this one will last. Great support from my Independent, but question mark over Land Rover quality control. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

I am now on my fourth fromt diff.

The original was replaced at 150k with a new JLR part, as discussed earlier in the thread to solve a loud whining. This was replaced six months later with another New JLR, under warranty, diff after the new diff developed a similar whine. In both cases, I had to wait months whilst a new diff was prepared by JLR. It appears that they do not keep any stock for these type of parts for vehicles on this age; understandable really.

So when the second new diff started to whine, I decided I did not want another new JLR diff, but looked for a specialist to refurbish mine with good quality parts. This is what I have done but in the process found that the previous JLR diff comprised a mixture of non standard parts And tha failure of the main bearing had resulted in severe wear on the crown wheel and pinion.

I am now enjoying relative peace, listening to all the once familiar creaks, rattles and squeaks masked by the diff whine, hoping now that the diff saga is over.

The reason I share this is to say what I learnt. Firstly, that that a specialist is probably a better option than going for the manufacturers support at this age of vehicle. Secondly, to say that the senior technician at the LR Dealer who was kind enough to test drive my car to confirm the problem, was firmly of the view that the transmission and diff oils should be changed regularly. I have always taken the view that the sealed for life statement really means sealed for the length of the warranty and this seems to be the case. My oils were first changed at 100k, then roughly every 30k. I shall change the new diff oil after about 1k just to monitor condition and wear.

On the financial front, the latest diff rebuild cost about £1k. JLR wanted over £2.5k for another new one - £1.5k more than the previous new ones. That tells me that they wanted to price themselves out of this particular problem.

The RR has now done 210k and I have explained to her indoors that it is not just a car, it is a restoration project and will remain so indefinitely. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

I had a rear diff fail in a brand new P38, less than 1,000 miles.
The replacement was still going good when I sold the car at 100,000+ miles.

Some you win and some you loose.
